​How synonymous are start and commence?​

Let us compare some of the collocations of start and commence. This extract from the SkELL corpus in Sketch Engine
​shows the most common subjects and objects of start in green and of commence in red.
​It also tells us that start is about 25 times more frequent in this very large sample of English. 
It therefore seems unrealistic to regard these words as synonyms.
