About this course

Course topics

This course trains teachers in many aspects of vocabulary knowledge and skills that are familiar to linguists, but have not been widely applied to language teaching.

The course is conducted on the Versatile e-learning site linked below. It contains information, presentations, quizzes, task and discussions. 

There are ten units covering the topics listed on the right. Course participants can move through the course at their own pace. One unit per week is recommended.

  • A task-based approach to vocabulary teaching and learning.
  • What it means to know a word.
  • How to study vocabulary: quantity and quality.
  • Use of dictionaries, SkELL, VersaText, COCA and CorpusMate.
  • Contemporary pedagogical linguistics: text, lexis, semantics, phonology.
  • Knowing a word so as to use it in phrases, clauses, sentences, texts.
  • Functions of parts of speech.
  • Word lists.
  • Vocabulary testing.  ​
